Active Threat Rifle Disarms

Recently I posted the video of the Gracie Breakdown of the Waffle House incident, which reviewed a recent event where a hero, James Shaw Jr., bravely disarmed a rifle-armed active shooter.

Some BIG assumptions were made in that video – there was some good stuff, but other things not so well explained or demonstrated. The Inverse Correlation Graph Rener Gracie offered is highly problematic, and in fact irresponsible considering his stature in the Brazilian Jiujitsu community.

Briefly reviewing a number of other offerings in other videos on the same topic online was disturbing, to say the least….

Here at In Harm’s Way I present alternatives for disarming a rifle. In this class we also addressed “high ready” situation where a shooter may be manipulating his rifle muzzle-up, but we did not video those. Perhaps I’ll present those at a later time.

Again, I applaud Rener Gracie for addressing this issue. His passion and interest are clear, and his reach within the grappling and self defense community is broad. All the more reason he needs to consider what he teaches rather than just putting it out there. I am not interested in taking him to task to build myself up – I don’t put my name out there, and I don’t make money from teaching.

Something I would like to see from him in these offerings, especially those involving firearms, is more practical knowledge on how guns actually work, and the things to be aware of when in the critical, life and death situation of grappling with a gun involved. That would only make these breakdowns better.
