Life and Death and Newaza…

“Judo is nothing less than a martial art. When a soldier breaks his sword and runs out of arrows, in the end, life and death is determined with newaza.”
– Ushijima Tatsukuma
Quoted on Eliot Kelly’s site , which further details some of Ushijima’s training regimen, and his attitude toward competition, which reads more like that of a battle-hardened samurai.
Its no wonder his physique, and technique, and that of his student, the great Kimura, are still renowned.
Newaza is of course “ground work.”
