“In order to obtain protection from other men, any means for attaining this end is a natural good.”

Epicurus, Principal Doctrines

With study, I’m finding some things in Epicureanism interesting. Part of me is more in the Garden than on the Porch.

A rival sect to Stoicism, it seems Epicureanism gained something of a bad rap on certain fronts, in part perhaps because it was amazingly modern and forward thinking in many of it’s elements.  A good deal of the bad rap appears to have been from misunderstanding or just plain slander.

Some Stoics even quoted Epicurus, both in opposition to him and noting when he had good points – something we seem to have lost in modern Western culture.
